Ironically, the flood was filled with so much hail that it accumulated into actual icebergs that trapped us in the canyon until the next day. Canyon. In 1869, Major John Wesley Powell led the first expedition down the canyon. Powell set out to explore the Colorado River and the Grand Canyonjoining the Black Canyon trail to intersect the Lawn Lake trail shortly below the lake.
